Let’s talk about wounds-chronic wounds are NOT normal!
Chronic wounds affect over half a million Australians every day and are much more common than most people realise. Chronic wounds are also NOT normal and should be treated to enable optimal quality of life for wound sufferers.
It’s Wound Awareness Week, 15th – 21st July 2019. With the theme “Let’s Talk About Wounds”, the aim this year is to get people talking about the rising issue of wounds. Many individuals don’t know the wound warning signs, therefore suffer for longer than necessary as they don’t know that their wound can be treated.
What are wound warning signs?

What to do if you have chronic wounds?
Sharon Bradshaw, the leading wound care specialist at ACWS Clinic, shares with us insights on what the clinic is all about here.
Why choose the Advance Wound Care Service (AWCS) Clinic
At the Advance Wound Care Service (AWCS) Clinic at Toukley Family Practice and Mariners Medical we realise that chronic wounds are not normal and can pose a serious health epidemic in a person’s quality of life impacting on their capacity to work, socialise and engage in the community.
Evidence based approach
Our clinic utilises an evidence based wound management approach, that can treat a variety of chronic wounds through the changing stages of healing, by reducing infections or complications, as well as helping prevent future chronic wound development whilst restoring the persons functional activities of daily life.
Collaboration of healthcare professionals
Our small clinic brings together clinicians from different disciplines and specialties to deal with multiple factors contributing to a chronic wound. We support the person through each visit and prepare them to cope through this challenging time by constantly updating and educating them on the challenges that lie ahead.
Education matters
Education is very important to us, the person and their loved one or care giver. By involving everyone in the plan of care means that individuals remain empowered and become active participants in the plan of care and have greater knowledge about promoting wound healing, preventing infection and more importantly preventing reoccurrence.
Integrated wound care solution
The AWCS has developed an integrated wound care community, to coordinate wound healing process across all care settings, utilizing speciality GPs, from a variety of different backgrounds and disciplines focusing on wound care. Our patients recieve better holistic management of their co-morbidities and I feel that that we have successfully shifted the focus from simply treating the wound to treating the wounded patient.
We work hard to heal every wound within 12 to 18 weeks of the first review and have achieved a great success rate simply by helping individuals to take control of their health challenges, which makes people feel good about improving their quality of life.
I certainly can say that “With wound care, you get to see the whole process, we commiserate and celebrate with people which is a part of the journey. I find that wound care is truly rewarding.”
Remember, chronic wounds are not normal!
